• What is it? SIM swapping is a service, designed for lawful ends, which allows you to transfer your phone number to a new SIM card. However, it can also be used unlawfully, to obtain confidential or sensitive data from users.

Fraudsters can induce a telephone operators to issue a new SIM card with the same number, pretending to be the legitimate holder of that number, and pretending to have just had their phone or documents stolen. If the attempt is successful, the fraudsters obtain a new SIM card linked to the victim’s number, meaning the victim has to have the telephone connection deactivated from their smartphone.

  • How can I recognize it?
    • SIM card suddenly stops working
  • What should I do?
    • Be very careful if your SIM stops working (i.e. if it no longer receives or makes phone calls) and contact your mobile phone operator immediately.
    • Choose alternative methods to receiving passwords via text message (e.g. use authentication apps).
